It was love at first sight. King Carlo Albert of Savoy, it is said, couldn't resist tasting Barolo and, to ensure adequate supplies of that exquisite Nebbiolo, decided to purchase the castle of Verduno, where General Staglieno, an expert oenologist, produced a first-rate Barolo. The Savoy sovereign was just one of the first to be convinced of the value of that wine, now produced in a limited area of the Langhe but known throughout the world. Grappa inevitably followed in the footsteps of wine, becoming a benchmark for "dry Piedmontese wines.".

In 2001, in Bordeaux, it won the only gold medal ever awarded to a Grappa.
